Mark de la Iglesia is a Senior Director in the Democracy practice at Third Plateau, where he supports philanthropic funders, organizations, and leaders working to strengthen American democracy. Mark facilitates learning and catalyzes action amongst donors concerned with the health of American democracy and advises funders on their democracy-related giving.

Mark has two decades of experience across government, non-profits, and philanthropy, most of it focused on promoting more effective, accountable governance. In the years prior to Third Plateau, Mark led Freedom House’s non-partisan analysis and communications about American democracy, shaped a new initiative to build trust in elections, advised donors on democracy-related giving, and forged and implemented international grantmaking strategies on anti-corruption and government accountability issues. Mark started his career on Capitol Hill and later managed legislative affairs at the U.S. State Department.

Mark is a graduate of Northwestern University and holds a Master of Public Affairs from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs, where he also recently taught a policy course on institutional reforms to strengthen executive accountability. Mark grew up in the Seattle-Tacoma area, where he still spends much of the summer, helping his wife and two kids escape the Washington, D.C. heat. He loves good music, seeing new places, laughing with friends, and a lively debate.
