Defending Civil Society: Actions for Philanthropy and Nonprofits

January 30, 2025

On January 8, Mike Berkowitz, Third Plateau Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Democracy Funders Network, spotlighted a critical issue in the Chronicle of PhilanthropyHow Trump Could Target Nonprofits — and How to Protect Yours.”

Unfortunately, that warning is no longer theoretical.

While civil society should not be immune from criticism and oversight, it also should not be silenced or shuttered based on its ideals.

As nonprofits and philanthropists find their footing in this new reality, here are five key actions to help defend civil society:

  • Spotlight repressive tactics – Expose efforts to undermine democracy and build public support for those targeted.

  • Unite in coalitions – Join forces with pro-democracy groups and advocates. Collective action reduces risk for individual organizations and strengthens the broader movement.

  • Deepen community ties – Expand relationships with local civic and political leaders to mobilize support when organizations or issues come under attack. A strong network makes it harder to silence groups.

  • Ensure compliance – Review programs, policies, and procedures to follow the law and minimize openings for partisan investigations.

  • Invest in protection – Strengthen federal lobbying, crisis communications, and legal support to monitor threats and build relationships with key lawmakers.

American philanthropy has long played a crucial role in fostering vibrant civic spaces—and that responsibility has never been more urgent. A strong nonprofit and public sector is central to our democracy, and we must protect and safeguard its integrity.
