Position Overview

Third Plateau, a growing multi-disciplinary social impact strategy firm, is looking for a skilled, self-directed professional to support our Research, Evaluation, and Learning team as a Researcher. Under the guidance of one of Third Plateau’s Senior Researchers, the Researcher will primarily focus on the implementation, analysis, and presentation of research, evaluation, and learning projects for Third Plateau’s diverse set of clients to help bring bold visions to reality and drive social change. The Researcher is also expected to help manage client relationships, and prepare for/attend client meetings. Top candidates will be highly organized, able to work under tight deadlines, able to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously, and be hungry to learn.

Location: United States - any location in the continental U.S., with access to office space available in the Bay Area or Sacramento, California. Please note that being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and Third Plateau, as we are not able to sponsor applicants for work visas at this time.

Starting Annual Salary (Exempt): Position will be eligible for an annual bonus and salary increase after the first year

  • Researcher I: $75,000 - $90,000

  • Researcher II: $90,000 - $110,000

A compensation committee of at least one department head, co-founder, and the COO will meet to discuss band (Researcher I vs II) and potential starting salary within the band by weighing the candidate's expected contribution in terms of previous experience and expertise against current Third Plateau employees. We commit to sharing the reasoning used to determine starting salary with you. The expectation is not for new team members to be hired with a starting salary at the top of the band but to have a salary that adequately compensates experience and expertise while countering pay inequality and upholding internal parity.

What You'll Do

The Researcher serves as an integral part of the Third Plateau team. Under the guidance of a Senior Researcher, the Researcher will primarily focus on research and writing. While a Researcher is expected to contribute in many ways to the Research and Evaluation projects within the company, typical responsibilities include the following:

  • Conducts primary and secondary qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods research. Potential projects include, but are not limited to: designing research and evaluation projects; facilitating, coding, and synthesizing information from interviews; building and analyzing surveys; conducting desk research for strategic planning on a variety of topics including client markets, landscapes, and issues in various fields; executing donor prospect research; analyzing philanthropic investments over time; and providing research operations support across projects;
  • Manages projects from planning to delivery; leads and supports quantitative and qualitative evaluations; utilizes appropriate tools to manage project timelines; plans and facilitates project meetings;
  • Asks good questions and has good listening skills, an eagerness to learn, an open mind, resourcefulness, and a commitment to rigor.
  • Participates in team-based collaborative efforts. Able to engage with team members through regular team meetings, in-person retreats requiring travel, coordinating regular client meetings virtually and in-person, scheduling, and facilitating;
  • Identifies and develops the most relevant and appropriate research methods to answer research and evaluation questions, and makes sound methodological justifications for using them;
  • Collects, stores, summarizes, and synthesizes complex qualitative and quantitative data;
  • Writes concisely, edits efficiently, and produces client-ready work
  • Communicates research findings through compelling written, visual, and real-time mediums in accessible, engaging, and actionable ways for our diverse set of clients;
  • Produces a high volume of critical research and writing for our clients;
  • Takes initiative and ownership of projects, is detail-oriented, leverages our diverse team, and demonstrates how-to thinking and a knack for getting things done.
