Position Overview

Third Plateau, a growing multi-disciplinary social impact strategy firm, is looking for a self-directed professional to serve as a Director of Marketing. The position will primarily focus on overseeing and managing the firm’s marketing strategy and brand management, as well as play a critical role in content creation. The role will report to a Third Plateau Vice President.

Location: Remote. United States - any location, with access to office space in the Bay Area and Sacramento, California. Please note that being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and Third Plateau, as we are not able to sponsor applicants for work visas at this time.

Starting Annual Salary (Exempt):

  • Director 1: $85,000 - $105,000
  • Director 2: $105,000 - $120,000

A compensation committee of at least one department head, co-founder, and the COO will meet to discuss band and potential starting salary within the band by weighing the candidate's expected contribution in terms of previous experience and expertise against current Third Plateau employees. We commit to sharing the reasoning used to determine starting salary with you. The expectation is not for new team members to be hired with a starting salary at the top of the band, but to have a salary that adequately compensates experience and expertise while countering pay inequality and upholding internal parity.

What You'll Do

The Director of Marketing will oversee the firm’s promotional efforts to help elevate and grow the organization’s visibility and reach with funders and nonprofits working to drive meaningful social change across the country. The Director will be responsible for setting and leading a comprehensive and aligned marketing strategy on multiple platforms that maximizes Third Plateau’s external positioning and presence, including conveying our brand effectively and consistently in alignment with the organization’s mission and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Marketing Strategy and Brand Management (50%)

  • Develop and then oversee strategic marketing direction for Third Plateau, particularly bringing visibility to our work with nonprofits, private foundations, fiscal sponsorship, and cross-ideological coalitions.
  • Collaborate on business development efforts to set marketing priorities, identify target audiences, and uncover insights for marketing and branding strategies.
  • Lead the ideation, development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic marketing tactics (marketing, brand, campaign, website, social media, advertising, etc.).
  • Formulate marketing goals and objectives in alignment with Third Plateau’s strategic plan into an annual marketing plan, specifying deliverables, workflows, and quarterly reporting to leadership on marketing plan tactics with key performance indicators.
  • Development and management of a marketing budget for activities and tactics in accordance with the marketing plan.

Content Creation (25%)

  • Contribute to Third Plateau’s marketing operations, including preparing branded materials (presentations, proposals, etc.), and managing the execution of inbound and outbound marketing efforts (e.g., overseeing an editorial calendar and basic copywriting).
  • Develop a compelling narrative for the firm’s Democracy Team, which helps convene, connect, and advise funders, organizational leaders, scholars, opinion influencers, and other key stakeholders working to improve American democracy.
  • Craft and strategically push out messaging to attract new initiatives in search of fiscal sponsorship support.
  • Create simple graphics for social media, newsletters, and other communications.

Organizational Stewardship (25%)

  • Tend to internal administrative items (e.g., emails/slack, timekeeping, expenses, HR).
  • Participate in internal activities (i.e., full team meetings, peer learning communities, culture-building activities, and regular check-ins with your supervisor).
  • Engage in individual and teamwide professional development/learning opportunities.

What You'll Need

  • 7+ years of professional marketing and/or communications experience plus strong project management skills.
  • Be an organized self-starter able to prioritize and juggle multiple assignments.
  • Sound understanding of marketing principles and trends that promote services for nonprofits and funders in the social, public, and private sectors.
  • A nuanced understanding of, and multifaceted experience with, communicating for social change, including narrative development and storytelling, strategic communications, and diverse audience targeting.
  • Graphic design skills
  • Expertise with digital marketing, graphic design, and analytical platforms, including, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google Analytics, MailChimp, and graphic design platforms such as Canva, Photoshop, or InDesign.
