Position Overview

Third Plateau, a growing multi-disciplinary social impact strategy firm, is looking for a self-directed professional to serve as a Controller. The position will primarily focus on overseeing and managing the firm’s accounting and its related policies, procedures, reporting, and controls. The role will report to the Chief Financial Officer.

Start Date: March 1, 2024

Location: Flexible on remote locations, with access to office space in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Please note that being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and Third Plateau, as we are not able to sponsor applicants for work visas at this time.

Starting Annual Salary (Exempt): $120,000 - $135,000

A compensation committee of at least one department head, co-founder, and the COO will meet to discuss band and potential starting salary within the band by weighing the candidate's expected contribution in terms of previous experience and expertise against current Third Plateau employees. We commit to sharing the reasoning used to determine starting salary with you. The expectation is not for new team members to be hired with a starting salary at the top of the band, but to have a salary that adequately compensates experience and expertise while countering pay inequality and upholding internal parity.

What You'll Do

The Controller will oversee the firm’s accounting activities to ensure the right practices are in place to position the firm for growth. The role will manage all traditional accounting areas from AR/AP, period closes, and account reconciliations, but will also partner closely with the CFO and other members of the finance and leadership teams to help drive project profitability and provide leaders with the information they need to make informed decisions. The Controller will supervise 1-2 staff members but will work cross functionally across the full leadership team and the firm’s internal departments. This is a perfect role for someone who loves systems, has a continuous improvement mindset, and wants to be a part of a growing firm striving to create meaningful change in the world.

Financial Oversight (65%)

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the organization's accounting functions, including equipment, depreciation, accrued assets and liabilities, payroll accruals, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and accounting for service contracts.
  • Ensure adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and own efficient internal control systems.
  • Manage the preparation of monthly financial reports, ensuring they are accurate, timely, and provide clear visibility into financial performance as well as foster effective business decision making.
  • Oversee management of cash balance policies and, when necessary, provide cashflow forecasting
  • Manage the department-based expense allocation system ensuring meaningful and accurate allocation of overhead and management/administrative HR costs.
  • Coordinate with external CPA firm to ensure proactive tax planning, end-of-year tax liability forecasting, timely and accurate tax preparation and filing.
  • Coordinate the comprehensive annual budget process and, when necessary, coordinate midyear reforecasting.

Financial Close (15%)

  • Lead the financial close process, demonstrating a keen attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews and reconciliations to identify and address discrepancies.
  • Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations, ensuring compliance with internal policies and accounting standards.
  • Manage the preparation of monthly financial reports, ensuring they are accurate, timely, and provide clear visibility into financial performance as well as foster effective business decision making.

Financial Reporting (10%)

  • Drive the preparation and presentation of timely and accurate financial statements, including reporting on specified performance metrics.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to gather and analyze financial data for strategic decision-making.
  • Perform detailed variance analyses and prepare insightful account summaries when necessary.

Team & Department Participation (10%)

  • Supervise and review the work of accounting staff, fostering an environment of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Train and mentor accounting staff, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills required to perform their roles effectively.
  • Foster a culture of transparency and accountability within the accounting team, driving a high standard of ethics and professionalism.
  • Continuously seek ways to streamline processes and improve the efficiency of the accounting function.
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards.
  • Assist the CFO with strategic planning and risk management from a financial perspective.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of accounting for service contracts, depreciation, payroll accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cost accounting.
  • Expertise in financial close processes, presentation of financial statements, and strategic financial planning.
  • Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel. Experience with Sage Intacct a plus.
  • Experience with consulting or professional services organization a plus
  • Experience with mid-large businesses ($50M+) a plus
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field preferred
  • CPA licensure required - California
  • Audit experience highly preferred
  • 7+ years in senior financial roles, with a focus on financial reporting and leadership responsibilities
    7+ years of General Ledger (G/L) Accounting Experience
  • 3+ years of managerial experience
